We (PPG) are also OEM on Harleys, including the custom shop. Im working on getting PPG to get some color samples or chips out to make it even easier to get a reference point. I will say I have not had to do that yet.
At least with us if you have a color issue you can bring it back and we can "adjust" it a little to make it better. Trust me I have used them alot and it is total shit bottom line. We have already been working on most of the colors and have some nice stuff that matches WAY better then the only other competitors lorwrong. What the manufactures have is a "standard" match that is what we in the industry refer to as a "blendable" match. We did it already!!! Me as a tech rep cant and wont guarantee a perfect color match because of the reason you listed above. We have already done this hence the new formula numbers. You can waste a lot of expensive paint doing this. It is not worth the time to put hours into matching each color that comes in the door and mix and remix modifying the formula and spraying multiple test cards to get the desired match. The other problem is most people only want a small amount of paint like a 1/2 pint. UV exposure does play a part but most bikes are kept indoors anyhow. How many coats and how heavy it is applied. Most color issues are from the amount of "mid" coat that is applied at the oem. The spectrometer is and was designed to get you a "starting" point or "blendable" match if you have no other resources to pull from. The problem is.It will not read a 3-stage good enough to get a great match. Ours as most others are a 5 angle unit that is very nice.
